This is a wonderful old cape that was worn to protect the clothing from hair oils, macassars, etc while brushing, styling or having your hair cut. It may have been used at a home inboudoir or perhaps at a barber. It is handmade from linen damask with two rows of drawnwork around the bottom and 3.5″ of hand tied fringe along the bottom edge. The neckline is trimmed with an embroidered white cotton tape.

Approximate measurements when laid flat as shown in 2nd and 3rd photos:
19″ across at the shoulders (48.26cm)
9″ across each front panel at drawnwork (22.86cm)
19.5″ across back at drawnwork (49.53cm)
20.5″ (including 3.5″ of fringe) down center back at collar to ends of fringe (52.07cm)
8.5″from shoulder to side of collar (21.6cm)

As shown, there are a few issues including the fringe being knotted from laundering and a snag along a side edge with a light rust colored stain. For its age, it is overall in Very Good condition.
