An essential part of the Elizabethan or Tudor woman’s wardrobe, the coif was worn to keep hair tidy and under other hats to protect them from hair oils. This white linen coif, or cap kercher, is hand stitched with linen thread and has a cotton tape drawstring in the back. After wrapping braided hair around head, the drawstring is used to gather the coif back into a pouch and is then wound around the braids and tied to keep the coif securely on the head.
